Trump Demands Gaza Deal; Bibi Says Thanks but No Hamas

Jun 29, 2025 10:33 am | News, Ticker, Virtual Jerusalem

Under growing U.S. pressure and legal strain at home, Netanyahu says Israel will not back down without expelling Hamas leaders from Gaza and dismantling the terror group completely. Even his budding bromance with Trump, and the President’s legal advocacy to dismiss charges against him, will not make him budge.

As negotiations resume in Doha over a possible ceasefire in Gaza, U.S. President Donald Trump issued a loud and clear demand on Friday: “MAKE THE DEAL IN GAZA. GET THE HOSTAGES BACK!!! DJT.”

The all-caps statement, posted to Trump’s Truth Social platform, reflected a new level of urgency from the White House. It also signaled growing frustration with the prolonged war and the slow pace of diplomacy—placing direct pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to deliver results.

But Netanyahu is standing firm. Despite the intense political heat and renewed scrutiny from Israeli courts, the prime minister has reaffirmed that Israel will not accept any agreement that does not include the total disarmament of Hamas and the exile of its leadership from the Gaza Strip.

“There will be no deal unless Hamas is removed from Gaza. The war’s goals are clear, and we are not deviating,” a senior Israeli official told Israel National News on Friday. The source emphasized that Israel’s presence in the Doha talks is not to compromise but to ensure any framework leads to “the end of Hamas rule and the safe return of all hostages.”

Trump’s Pressure and Netanyahu’s Legal Distractions

Trump’s statement came hours before Netanyahu was scheduled to appear in court in Jerusalem for continued hearings in Case 4000, one of several ongoing corruption cases against him. In recent months, Trump has repeatedly criticized Israel’s legal system—calling it “a disaster” and “a disgrace”—and implying that judicial interference is paralyzing Israel at a critical moment.

“The prime minister is being pulled between war rooms and courtrooms,” said one Likud insider, who asked not to be named. “Trump sees it and he’s saying what many Israelis are whispering—how do you lead a nation in wartime under constant legal attack?”

Doha Frameworks, But No Breakthrough

The Doha negotiations, brokered by the U.S., Qatar, and Egypt, focus on a phased deal: a short-term ceasefire and limited hostage release, followed by a broader political and security arrangement. While the Biden-Trump joint diplomatic front has pushed for creative solutions—including the potential exile of Hamas leaders to Qatar or another Arab state—Israel remains skeptical of anything short of full capitulation by Hamas.

Netanyahu’s office issued a rare public statement this week confirming that Israel’s representatives are “examining a framework for the release of all our hostages and the elimination of Hamas’s military and governing capabilities.” This dual objective—freedom for captives and the political-military defeat of Hamas—has become the uncompromising threshold for any agreement.

Hostage Families vs. Right-Wing Pressure

The Israeli public is increasingly divided. Families of remaining hostages have launched another wave of demonstrations, urging the government to accept the U.S.-backed deal and bring loved ones home. Some have gone so far as to call on Netanyahu to “sacrifice his political future” if that’s what it takes to make a deal.

But Netanyahu is equally constrained by the right. Ministers Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir have threatened to collapse the coalition if any deal allows Hamas to retain power in any form. “Total victory or total betrayal,” Ben-Gvir said bluntly this week.

Conclusion: Bibi Will Not Budge Without Hamas Exit

Even as Trump demands movement, Netanyahu’s stance remains resolute. “Without disarming and dismantling Hamas, there is no victory,” he told military leaders in a closed briefing this week, according to Israel Hayom. “And without victory, there is no deal.”

Until Hamas agrees to leave Gaza—by force or negotiation—Israel will not withdraw, and the war will continue. As Netanyahu put it: “We will not hand Gaza back to the murderers of October 7.”
