Mutual accusations between jumpy Jerusalem and leaderless Washington. as military actions from multiple direction threaten the fragile truce.

The tenuous ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah is under severe strain due to escalating military engagements and mutual allegations of violations. On December 2, Israeli airstrikes targeted southern Lebanese villages, resulting in at least 11 fatalities. The Lebanese Health Ministry reported six deaths in Haris, four in Tallousah, and one in Marjayoun. These strikes were in retaliation for Hezbollah’s attack on an Israeli military site, which the group claimed was a response to Israel’s repeated ceasefire breaches.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned that if the ceasefire collapses, Israel will expand its military operations to target the Lebanese state itself. He emphasized, “We will not hesitate to strike at the Lebanese state if Hezbollah continues its provocations.”

In response to the escalating tensions, Lebanon has appealed to the United States and France to pressure Israel into adhering to the ceasefire terms. Lebanese officials, including Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, have expressed concerns over Israel’s actions and emphasized the need for international intervention to uphold the truce.

The situation is further complicated by reports of Israeli airstrikes in central Beirut, which have caused significant casualties and infrastructure damage. These attacks have intensified the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, leading to widespread displacement and straining the country’s resources.

The United States has been involved in mediating the ceasefire and has expressed concerns over the recent developments. However, there have been tensions between Washington and Jerusalem regarding the scope and scale of Israel’s military operations in Lebanon. U.S. officials have reportedly warned Israel about the potential repercussions of expanding its attacks, particularly in Beirut, and have urged restraint to prevent further destabilization of the region.

Despite these diplomatic efforts, the ceasefire remains precarious, with both Israel and Hezbollah engaging in retaliatory actions. The international community continues to call for de-escalation and adherence to the ceasefire agreement to prevent a full-scale conflict. The coming days will be critical in determining whether the truce can hold or if the region will descend into further violence.
