Evidently still in his “Dark Brandon” mode, Joe Biden lectured Israel about what how it should respond to the events of October 7, saying that Israel should not make the errors that America did after 9/11.
The doddering denizen of the White House lectured Israel about its response to the Hamas invasion of 10/7, saying that Netanyahu is harming Israel and threatened to cut off offensive weapons if Israel’s leadership, political and military. does as it says and enters Rafah to finish Hamas.
“America made a mistake. What did we do? We hunted bin Laden until we eliminated him. But at the same time, we shouldn’t have gotten into Ukraine! That is… We shouldn’t have gotten into this… in Iraq and Afghanistan.”
This is hardly the first time that the fast-declining dodderer has confused Ukraine and Iraq. Last June, he said that Russian President Vladimir Putin was “losing the war in Iraq.” In 2022, he called the Ukrainian city of Kherson El-Fallujah.
Leaving aside the fact that this increasingly demented excuse for a US President added to his already long list of confusing countries and people, what exactly was the congnitive challenged Commander in Chief trying to tell the Israelis?
That Israel should leave Hamas alone and instead hunt down and eliminate a single Hamas leader?
One leader he clearly does want to eliminate is Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu who, he proclaimed, is “hurting Israel more than helping Israel” in how he is approaching its war against Hamas in Gaza. The US leader expressed support for Israel’s right to pursue Hamas after the October 7 attack, but said that Israel “must pay more attention to the innocent lives being lost as a consequence of the actions taken”. So, according to Biden, Israel should pursue Hamas, evidently in Iraq, Aghanistan or Ukraine rather than across Israel’s southern border.
Mr Biden said of the death toll in Gaza: “It’s contrary to what Israel stands for. And I think it’s a big mistake.” He didn’t indicate what would be an acceptable death toll, what Israel should be doing instead, or comparing Gaza civilian casualties with civilians that the US killed in Iraq or Afganistan, wars he wholeheartedly supported.
Mr Biden said a potential Israeli invasion of the Gaza city of Rafah, where more than 1.3 million Palestinians are sheltering, is “a red line” for him, but said he would not cut off American supply of some defensive weapons.
Asked whether an Israeli invasion of Rafah would be a red line for him with Netanyahu, Biden said: “It is a red line but I’m never going to leave Israel. The defense of Israel is still critical. So there’s no red line (in which) I’m going to cut off all weapons so they don’t have the Iron Dome to protect them.”
So apparently Biden is ready to cut off all weapons except Iron Dome, or perhaps solely defensive ones. Problem with that is that just last week Biden order sanctions applied to a company supplying a key component for the essential Israeli-made anti-missile defense system.
While Biden said he was “never going to leave Israel,” he may not have noticed, but he is not in Israel. If he meant that he is not going to leave Israeli defenseless, he is going to leave Israel no choice but to use more devastating weapons from different sources and to use methods that do not endanger Israeli soldiers as much as leaving them vulnerable, as Biden evidently threatens.
And yet Biden apparently wants to address the Knesset directly, bypassing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s hardline government and speaking directly to the Israeli public — at the Knesset or elsewhere to sell his profoundly confused and unrealistic, not to mention back-stabbing, vision for ending the war in Gaza. Leaving aside that the Knesset, elected by Israelis, is controlled by Netanyahu, and thus needs his permission of the man he says is “hurting Israel more than helping Israel.”
After his State of the Union rant, Biden was recorded telling a Senator and the Secretary State that he told Netanyahu that they are going to have a “come to Jesus” meeting. While the doddering denizen of the White House does indeed seem increasingly ready to meet his maker, it’s not so clear that Bibi is prepared to come along.
