Unprecedented 350 airstrikes and ground operations dismantle Syrian armed forces amid regional upheaval. Israel seizes Syrian Golan post and advances in buffer zone.

In a decisive military campaign, Israel has effectively neutralized Syria’s military capabilities following the collapse of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Over a 48-hour period, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted more than 350 airstrikes targeting key military installations across Syria. These operations aimed to prevent advanced weaponry from falling into the hands of extremist groups amid the ensuing power vacuum.

The IDF’s offensive focused on a wide array of military assets, including anti-aircraft batteries, missile depots, manufacturing facilities, drones, helicopters, fighter jets, tanks, hangars, radars, and naval vessels. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that these actions have “destroyed Syria’s navy,” underscoring the comprehensive nature of the strikes.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized the necessity of these operations, stating, “The fall of Assad has created a dangerous vacuum. Our mission is to ensure that weapons of mass destruction or advanced military capabilities do not reach those who seek to harm Israel.” He added that the strikes were “defensive, strategic, and essential to our security.”

In addition to aerial assaults, Israeli ground forces have advanced into the demilitarized buffer zone from the Golan Heights, seizing abandoned Syrian military positions. This move aims to establish a “sterile defensive area” in southern Syria to prevent hostile entities from approaching Israel’s borders. Defense Minister Katz clarified that this zone is intended to maintain border security without a permanent troop presence.

The rapid advance of rebel groups, particularly Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a former al-Qaeda affiliate, has raised concerns about the potential emergence of a hostile Islamist-controlled state along Israel’s northern border. Lt. Col. (res.) Marco Moreno, a former senior officer in the IDF’s Human Intelligence Unit 504, noted, “The collapse of the Assad regime creates a vacuum that can easily be filled by terrorist organizations. Israel must act preemptively to secure its borders and prevent any destabilization.”

While some nations have condemned the incursions, citing violations of sovereignty, others recognize Israel’s right to self-defense. The United States has backed Israel’s operations, with officials stating that Israel has the right to defend itself against emerging threats. Biden Administration officials says that it will ensure the stay in Syrian territory is temporary. Good luck with that.
