Israeli forces thwarted a major terrorist plot, resulting in the killing of three armed assailants who opened fire at a checkpoint on the Bethlehem bypass road. This rapid and decisive action by the security forces tragically came after the loss of Cpl. Avraham Fetena, a 20-year-old soldier from Haifa, and the wounding of five other Israelis.
The attackers, who had alighted from their vehicle and opened fire, were equipped with axes and an extensive cache of ammunition—evidence of a planned massacre in Jerusalem, which was averted by the swift response of the Israel Police and other security personnel.
The wounded, suffering from varying degrees of injuries, were expeditiously transported to Hadassah-University Medical Center and Shaare Zedek Medical Center. On-site paramedics provided immediate care, stabilizing patients for evacuation, including a young man with critical upper body wounds and others with injuries to their limbs.
The preemptive actions of the Israel Police were critical in preventing what Jerusalem District Commander Doron Turgeman described as a potential “mass slaughter in Jerusalem.” The seizure of the assailants’ arsenal, including two pistols and an M-16 rifle, underscored the gravity of the intended attack.
Hamas, through its military wing the Izzadin al-Qassam Brigades, claimed the attack, which further intensified the security situation. The identities of the assailants revealed ties to known Hamas operatives, signaling a deeply rooted network aiming to destabilize the region.
This close call serves as a stark reminder of the perpetual vigilance required by security forces to maintain safety and security in the face of relentless threats of terrorism. The community, while mourning, also expressed deep gratitude for the security forces’ vigilance that averted a catastrophe.
