Haredi Netzah Yehuda unit hit by explosives and gunfire in Beit Hanoun pre-planned attack and fire on rescue unites as Hamas exploits knowledge of troop movements in deadliest incident for battalion since war began. Netanyahu and DM Katz respond to grave incident. Ben-Gvir calls for end to humanitarian aid.

Five Israeli soldiers were killed and 14 others wounded—two critically—on Monday night in a coordinated ambush by Hamas terrorists in the northern Gaza town of Beit Hanoun. All five slain soldiers served in the Netzah Yehuda Battalion, a Haredi unit within the Kfir Brigade. The attack marked the most devastating incident for the battalion since the Swords of Iron War began, underscoring the persistent threats still present in northern Gaza despite ongoing IDF operations.

The coordinated strike began around 10:00 p.m. as infantry forces were advancing on foot near armored and engineering vehicles. According to an initial IDF investigation, four to five explosive devices detonated in rapid succession, apparently planted in the preceding 48 hours. As soldiers scrambled to evacuate the wounded, Hamas gunmen opened fire, exploiting the chaos—and their knowledge of troop movements—to inflict maximum casualties. The IDF described the event as a premeditated and meticulously planned ambush based on prior observation and booby-trapping of key access routes.

The five soldiers who fell were identified as Sgt. First Class (res.) Benyamin Asulin, 28, from Haifa; Staff Sgt. Noam Aharon Musgadian, 20; Staff Sgt. Meir Shimon Amar, 20; Sgt. Moshe Nissim Frech, 20—all from Jerusalem; and Staff Sgt. Moshe Shmuel Noll, 21, from Beit Shemesh. Asulin was a reservist from the Northern Brigade of the Gaza Division who had volunteered to rejoin the operation. The remaining four were all active-duty members of Netzah Yehuda, a battalion that has borne a heavy operational burden since joining combat in Gaza.

The troops were part of a broader offensive involving the 646th Reserve Paratroopers Brigade and the Gaza Division’s Northern Brigade, targeting a well-fortified Hamas compound on the outskirts of Beit Hanoun. The area had already seen significant aerial and artillery bombardment over the past week.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, speaking from Washington, said, “This is a difficult morning. The people of Israel bow their heads and grieve for our fallen heroes, who gave their lives in the struggle to defeat Hamas and bring our hostages home.” Defense Minister Israel Katz praised the courage of the fallen: “They fought bravely and sacrificed everything to protect Israeli citizens and secure the return of our brothers and sisters.”

The loss triggered a wave of national mourning. Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion lamented the deaths of three soldiers from his city: “Children who grew up in our streets became brave warriors—and did not return. The city embraces their families and will never forget them.” In Haifa, Mayor Yona Yahav described Asulin as “a young man full of dreams who paused his life to defend his country.” Beit Shemesh Mayor Shmuel Greenberg called Noll “a model of courage and devotion.”

Noam Musgadian’s brother, Roi, remembered him as “a righteous and holy soul” who bore the burdens of others with quiet strength. “Noam wasn’t just my little brother—he was my big brother in spirit,” he wrote. “He cared for us all.” One of the wounded, Yedidya Buskowitz, sent a message from his hospital bed: “My friends were killed. I was hit by shrapnel. We will not break. Netzah Yehuda is a battalion of heroes.”

The Netzah Yehuda Association noted that the unit had only recently begun this deployment in northern Gaza, stating, “They are among the most experienced ground forces in the sector. Alongside many operational successes, the unit has also paid a heavy price.”

In the wake of the ambush, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir called for the immediate withdrawal of Israeli negotiators from ceasefire talks in Doha, stating, “We cannot negotiate with terrorists while our soldiers are being murdered.” Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich criticized the government’s decision to allow more aid into Gaza, accusing it of strengthening Hamas and undermining Israel’s war efforts.palestinechronicle.com+1en.wikipedia.org+1en.wikipedia.org+8reuters.com+8thetimes.co.uk+8

The incident is likely to intensify internal debates within the Israeli government regarding the conduct of the war and the terms of any potential ceasefire. Hardline ministers are expected to push for more aggressive military actions and stricter controls on aid to Gaza, arguing that current policies endanger Israeli soldiers and citizens. The loss of five soldiers in a single ambush may also prompt a reassessment of operational strategies and intelligence gathering to prevent similar incidents in the future.
