The Anti-Defamation Leagueexpressed appreciation for the steps taken by the leadership of Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, formerly known as Twitter, in addressing issues of hate and antisemitism, announcing their intentions to resume advertising on the platform despite ongoing concerns. It was a huge victory for the maverick tycoon and a vindication.
The ADL’s statement mentioned, “We appreciate X’s stated intent over the last few weeks to address antisemitism and hate on the platform. This has been useful; more needs to be done; and, as we have with other companies, in the spirit of collaboration, we are hopeful that we can continue to engage with X on this important matter.”
The history between Musk and the ADL has been contentious for about a year. Following Musk’s acquisition of the platform in 2022, the ADL had recommended companies to suspend their advertising on the site. This recommendation came after Musk’s decision to remove specific measures against hate speech. The ADL, however, at one juncture, continued its own advertising on the site.
Musk had previously criticized the ADL, alleging that their call for an advertisement boycott resulted in halving the company’s valuation. He even expressed intentions of suing the ADL for a considerable sum. He has responded to white supremacist posts on X but has asserted his position, stating he is “pro free speech, but against anti-Semitism of any kind.”
Addressing the allegations and clarifying their stance, the ADL emphasized that they have always been inclined to collaborate with platforms to tackle antisemitism effectively. The organization also refuted claims of orchestrating a boycott or being responsible for X’s notable drop in ad revenue. Their statement clarified, “To be clear, any allegation that ADL has somehow orchestrated a boycott of X or caused billions of dollars of losses to the company or is ‘pulling the strings’ for other advertisers is false. Indeed, we ourselves were advertising on the platform until the anti-ADL attacks began a few weeks ago. We now are preparing to do so again to bring our important message on fighting hate to X and its users.”
Musk responded positively to the ADL’s statement, posting, “Thank you for clarifying that you support advertising on X,” and acknowledging the ADL’s past and potential future advertisements on the platform.
