Reports: Hostage-Prisoner Exchange to Begin Within 72 Hours of Israeli Withdrawal from Gaza

Multiple Arab media outlets are reporting details of the proposed hostage-prisoner exchange deal between Israel and Hamas, citing Palestinian sources who say that the release process will begin within 72 hours of Israeli troops pulling back from Gaza. According to a top Hamas official quoted by AFP, Israel will release nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for 20 living hostages. The figure reportedly includes 250 prisoners serving life sentences and 1,700 others detained since the start of the war. The official said the exchange “should take place within 72 hours of the implementation of the deal,” which he added was “agreed with Palestinian factions.” A Palestinian source told the Saudi outlet Al-Sharq that the release of hostages and prisoners “will begin within 72 hours of the agreement’s implementation,” with well-informed sources indicating that the process could start next week. Another Saudi channel, Al-Hadath, reported that the 72-hour countdown for the hostage release will begin once Israeli troops withdraw to the agreed-upon lines in Gaza, a step that will follow the deal’s ratification by Israel. Earlier, a senior Palestinian source told Qatar’s Al Jazeera that mediators had accepted Palestinian maps showing an Israeli withdrawal from deep inside Gaza’s cities before the start of the release process. The deal reportedly includes “scheduled withdrawals” of Israeli forces and “guarantees from President Trump and the mediators,” the Hamas official told AFP. The same Palestinian source cited by Al-Sharq said the agreement calls for Israeli troops to withdraw from the Rafah crossing and its surrounding area. The deal also provides for the transfer of Palestinian patients and wounded individuals to Egypt for medical treatment, with the Rafah crossing to open in both directions once the agreement takes effect. According to another Hamas source who spoke to AFP, the deal stipulates that a minimum of 400 trucks of humanitarian aid will enter the Gaza Strip daily during the first five days of the ceasefire, with that number set to increase in the following days. The agreement also allows for “the return of displaced persons from the south of the Gaza Strip to Gaza (City) and the north immediately,” the source added.
