Suspected terrorist’s “work accident” saves Tel Aviv from potential massacre, likely next to a crowded football match
A significant tragedy was narrowly avoided in Tel Aviv on Sunday, August 19, 2024, when an explosive device carried by a suspected terrorist detonated prematurely, preventing what could have been a catastrophic bombing attack. The explosion occurred in the city’s southern Hatikva neighborhood, near Lehi Street, raising immediate suspicions of a planned terror attack.
The incident unfolded when a man, approximately 50 years old, was killed by an explosion believed to have originated from a bomb he was carrying. According to Assistant Commissioner Haim Bublil, commander of the Ayalon Precinct in Tel Aviv, “It’s sort of a miracle that it didn’t detonate in the nearby synagogue or shopping center. It could have ended with dozens killed.” This statement underscores the narrow escape that the city experienced.
Initial investigations, led by the Israeli police and Shin Bet, suggest that the explosion was likely a failed terror attempt. Tel Aviv District Police Commander Peretz Amar confirmed the authorities’ suspicions, stating, “The man who was killed was not an innocent civilian but rather was carrying the bomb. The terror angle is very relevant.” Amar also emphasized that the suspect appeared to have been acting alone, reducing fears of an immediate coordinated threat.
Further speculations have emerged regarding the possible target of the attack. One theory gaining traction among investigators is that the bomber intended to strike Bloomfield Stadium, located just a few kilometers away, where a football match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Bnei Sakhnin was taking place. The timing of the explosion, which coincided with the end of the match, has led some to believe that the bomber planned to detonate the device as fans were exiting the stadium.
Had the bomb gone off as intended, the consequences could have been devastating. Bloomfield Stadium has a capacity of nearly 30,000, and with the match drawing a large crowd, a successful attack could have resulted in scores of deaths and hundreds of injuries. “The thought of what could have happened if the bomb had gone off as fans were leaving is chilling,” said one senior security official, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The bomb, which was likely being transported for deployment at a more populated location, exploded near a truck parked on the street. The vehicle bore the brunt of the explosion, which also injured a bystander who was riding a scooter. The 33-year-old man was treated for moderate injuries and taken to Ichilov Hospital.
The incident represents a rare occurrence of an attempted bombing in Tel Aviv, a city that has faced numerous security challenges but has seen relatively few such attacks in recent years. The premature detonation of the device points to what officials are calling a “work accident,” a term often used to describe unintentional explosions that thwart the plans of terrorists.
The explosion has reignited discussions about the evolving security situation in Israel, particularly in urban centers like Tel Aviv. The recent escalation in violence, including rocket barrages targeting southern Israel and the continued threat of terror attacks, has heightened the sense of vigilance among security forces.
In light of the incident, security protocols in Tel Aviv have been reviewed and reinforced. While the identity of the deceased terrorist remains under investigation, police are working to determine if there were any accomplices or if this was indeed an isolated incident. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities combing through evidence from the scene and gathering intelligence to prevent any future attempts.
Assistant Commissioner Bublil remarked on the proximity of the explosion to public areas, stressing the potential disaster that was narrowly averted. He noted that the suspect’s target may have included a local synagogue, shopping center, or possibly Bloomfield Stadium, emphasizing the sheer scale of the potential tragedy.
The Israeli public has responded with a mix of relief and heightened concern. While the immediate threat appears to have been neutralized, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent dangers posed by terrorism. As the investigation progresses, Israeli officials remain on high alert, determined to uncover any further threats and ensure the safety of the nation.
Hallelujah! “Work accident”??? or Yhwh God’s intervention? I believe the latter! It was He Who brought you home to your promised land, just as He promised He would, and part of that promise is that you will never be removed again, while the sun rises and the grass grow… Hamas, et al should have read the Book, so they would know all they are accomplishing is filling His cup of wrath to its brim, along with the acts of the rest of ” the world (system)”! In the ’48-’49conflict, His angels directly intervened because Israeli people were woefully unprepared against several well armed and trained militaries! I believe it is His plan to be doing so again now, in order to keep His promise to you, from all those centuries ago. No single nation on Earth could stand alone against all the armed might of “the world”! But any nation AND Yhwh God can do so! He is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of the children of Israel, and He keeps His promises to you! Stand and see what He can do! Today is that day!
His work accident is our miracle! Praise Hashem!
Omein!!! Baruch HaShem!!!
