Chapter Three
Many years later, Haman, the wicked,
was promoted to #2 in the kingdom.
Everyone had to bow to him. But Mordechai, the Jew said no.
This made Haman, who had an inferiority
complex, very, very angry.
He decided to annihilate Mordechai's entire people, and offered the
king 10,000 talents - about 750 tons - of silver for the privilege.
The king said, "Do whatever you want," and ate another olive. They
drank to the decree.
Haman sent out a decree that within
the year, all the Jews would be slaughtered.
Chapter Four
The Jews dressed in sackcloth and
ashes (customary attire for depressing occasions) and mourned in the
streets.
Mordechai told Esther that this was probably an opportune moment to
cash in on the king's affection - she should go plead the case for her
people, the Jews.
Esther told him it was illegal to visit the king without an invitation.
She would get killed unless he put out his royal scepter to spare her.
But Mordechai convinced her to try. Meanwhile, all the Jews would fast
for three whole days.
