The Future?

The Israeli syndrome that people love to call the kulturkampf religious and sociocultural discord among Jews has many with pressure sores and tinder boxes. Nevertheless, five factors have kept them from tearing the country apart:

Israeli woman Social segmentation
Sad as it sounds, serves the cause of national cohesion. Religious groups have long been prone live apart and limit their encounters with the rest of Israel.. Today, the secular are joining this paradigm. Because Israel is too cramped to allow for clean and uneventful geographic separation, friction occurs in towns, neighborhoods, even individual apartment buildings levels too local, thus far, to escalate into a national showdown.

haredi man Separate services
Separate services help conflict-prone groups stay apart and away from each other's jagged nerves.

Diversity of Issues
The multiplicity of issues mitigates against the formation of bipolar warring camps. Ambiguity among the participants dampens their eagerness for showdown. Would be kultur-kampfers consistently and consciously retreat from the brink.

Two potential causes of fission
The Rabin assassination and the ethnic divide-have weakened for lack of belligerents.

Apocalypticism
Finally, not mentioned above, but always present, is the ultimate antidote to fission: Israelis' famous apocalypticism. Nearly all are aware that over the hill and beyond the borders lurk hostile parties who, if the internecine tensions fray the social fabric too severely, may try to undo Israel altogether.
